is not cool. >> let's talk about -- let's talk about appealing to latino voters. there's a new poll out today. back in 2008 mccain had 31% of latino vote. that was not as good as george w. bush in 2004 he had 44% of latino vote. romney need at least a quarter to a third of latino vote toeshs competitive in states like colorado where the debate is and that kind of thing. real quickly because i want to get to donna on this issue. what does he need to do to appeal to latino voters? >> i think latino voters need to know more about mitt romney. they know very little. precious little about him. the little they do know they don't like. he has begun to change his tone. ep needs to continue doing latino outreach and doing events, doing interviews, doing media, pouring money and resources into paid media and to outreach efforts. >> donna to that point, romney has actually moved closer to president obama on immigration issues just very recently saying he's not is going to rerocky the visas, deport young illegal immigrants under the new law here. does that present a problem to the president if he moves c

to go until the elections, we're taking an in-depth look this morning at the effect latinos could have on election dame you know that saying there's power in numbers? well, latinos have exactly that. according to the latest census, there are more than 50 million latinos in the u.s., and of those, more than 12.2 million are expected to show up at the polls on election day. that is just over half of latinos who are eligible to vote. joining me now, as they do every week at this time, cnn contributor maria cardona and amy holmes, anchor of "the real ne" on the blaze. good morning to both of you. maria, how critical is the latino vote in swing states like florida, for example? >> it's very critical, randi, and especially in this close election. we saw already the latino vote being decisive. in 2008, president obama would not have been able to turn florida, new mexico, colorado, nevada, would not have been able to turn those blue and win the election had it not been for the latino vote. in 2010, latinos basically saved democrats from losing the senate, and harry reid says this all the time.

are latino. canvassing in colorado, a swing state where the latino vote is hugely important. now, some are disappointed that he has not done more to help the illegal immigrants that come across the border. a few find this election a hard choice. >> we know that there is only one candidate that supports any kind of immigration reform that is of any real value and of course that is obama. romney would turn back any progress we have made. >> a lot of republicans see the hispanic vote as a huge prize. what has gone wrong? when ronald reagan said that latinos were naturally republican, he met that they were aspirational and socially conservative. mitt romney seems to turn them off. he backed a law in arizona which some said was racial profiling. he called for a high-tech fence along the mexican border and struck a hard note talking about illegal immigrants. >> the answer is self deportation, people decide that they can do better work here because they don't have legal documentation. >> the campaign has put on a burst of speed, intensely targeting latinos, especially in swing states like col

that came out, cnn-orc poll. latino voters choice for the president. whopping 70% chose president obama compared with 26 terz for mitt romney. romney here is doing worse than john mccain did back in 2008 who got 31%. the latino vote. also worse than george w. bush in 2004 who got 44% of the latino. anna, to you. is there anything at this point that romney can do to get the latino support up? >> well, suzanne, i think praying on novina might help. look, he -- we had a tough primary on the republican side. i think mitt romney has been an unknown commodity to his hispani hispanics. he doesn't come from a border state like john mccain or george w. bush did. he has not done a great intense voter outreach with the latinos because he ran out of money after the primary. he -- let me just be absolutely truthful and give smu straight talk as john mccain would say. mitt romney dug himself into a hole with latinos during the primary. he said some things that are coming back to haunt him. he now needs to find a way to dig himself out of that hole. i think the only way he will do it is if he really c

, and it's still the case, blacks and latinos are always sort of brought into that cue, but the cue was so big this time in terms of the entrants into the labor market some 873,000 new people -- more people employed, and so that obviously created more jobs for blacks and more for hispanics. >> we know the growth rate is still pretty weak. it's only at 1%. how does the economy actually grow? how does it become more healthy? >> i would expect that next quarter around it will be much greater. it's 1.3% now, but the signal that is we're seeing now, those signals will play out, and the thing that we've been saying for months is that the economy has not been slowed because lack of profitability. in fact, corporations have been experiencing record profits. they have record amounts of cash. we have record low interest rates. so all of the conditions for growth have been there, and so what we're seeing now happening is that they're beginning to materialize. >> finally, there's always the political aspect of all of this, and there's some conservative who's say, look, you know, we think you're fudgin

election the latino vote out there in nevada. the stat tistics from boomberg news shows nevada has the largest shift since 2008. latinos cast 15% of the ballot in 2008 and three quarters voted for obama in 2008. talk about how that is impacting the election now. >> there is a huge push to turn more voters out to the polls. to play up all of the rostered issues that seem to matter the most. it's a very large population in the state, it's about 20% of the population is latino organize gin and that goes up in clark county which is where lave is which is the main population of the state. this voting block cares a lot about the economy, a lot about education and immigration disease not rank as the highest issue of interest to these voters but it becomes an issue that is an underlying across the board, are you saying the right thing on this pop sick and it could be 2/3 one these voters are split on that. this is an issue candidates on both sides have been fighting about because obama made a promise to address it his first year in office and did not do that. he said he did not have time a

, to the latino community. notable he will be there as well. >> very interesting. thanks very, very much, jim acosta in littleton, colorado. >>> all right. this just coming in to cnn. the results of our brand new poll among latinos all over the united states. certainly one of the country's fastest growing and increasingly important groups of voters. look at this. it shows overwhelming support for president obama. he leads mitt romney 70% to 26% among likely latino voters. let's bring in our chief national correspondent john king joining us from denver, the site of the debate tomorrow night. john, you've taken a close look at these numbers. are there any nuggets in there that may be good for the romney campaign? because 70% of latinos saying they're likely to vote for the president of the united states, that's pretty bad for romney. >> reporter: wolf, i've scrubbed the numbers, looked at the cross tops and in a word, no, there is nothing encouraging for the romney campaign in the poll of likely latino voters. one way you judge an incumbent president, president obama, you ask people what do you

of figures suggest, in 1996, u t austin continued to use race in admissions and had a black and latino representation along the line of 18% combined. in the next year, 1997, university of texas was banned from using race by a lower court decision. they saw a decline in racial and ethnic diversity using socio- economic status alone in their admissions progress -- process. but by 2004, using socio- economic considerations in admissions and what is known as the top 10% plan, where students to graduate in the top 10% of their high school is automatically admitted, you see racial and ethnic diversity, black and latino representation actually increases above what texas had achieved in 1996. now, we are very clear in the report that part of the reason that there is greater -- there are greater levels of racial and ethnic diversity into a dozen for is that the latino population growth in texas during that time period. as a policy matter, i think it is fair to say that texas ought to be pursuing other race- neutral methods of increasing racial and ethnic diversity so that it more closely mirror

the middle of the road or the latino voters? >> geraldo, i think it will be important for him to talk about immigration reform and have a balanced approach of cutting down the time that we have for applications and people coming to the united states legally. i think he has to make sure he is enforcing the laws and as you know the big issue for virginians are going to be the defense cuts and i think that is what governor romney is going to sell and i think that is ultimately what is going to help him win the commonwealth of virginia. >> geraldo: what about the latino vote, though, congressman? i underand it that defense is a huge, huge issue in the commonwealth where there is so many defense facilities. but there are substantial number of latinos there, particularly around the disdistrict of columbia. if he talks tough, first of alllet me ask you this. i withdraw that statement. the governor said he will not repeal president obama's temporary dream act measure where he gave a pass, a two year visa to those students you know story who were brought here as children. do you regret that governor

in a more aggressive way. >> i want to ask you about the enthusiasm gap particularly among latino voters. we see in our polling while the president has a huge edge in the latino vote, there's a real drop-off since 2008 when then it was 77% enthusiasm, now it is 59% in terms of hispanic americans. what you going to do to make sure people turn out? >> nare sending me all over the country. i'll be at jefferson-jackson dinner in iowa, i've been it to florida. we have surrogates all across the country. we have a grassroots campaign that has been talked about as the most aggressive, the most focused on social media and on a broad cross-section of speaking to voters. we're going to knock on doors and talk to voters, and we're going to get that vote out. i agree that our work is cut out for us. it's cut out for them, too. that's what elections are all about. >> thank you very much, mr. mayor. i know you're out there at the campaign event where the president is going to be speaking later. you just gave your speech, and thanks for joining us today. >> thank you, andrea. sorry we were a little late, bu

and getting the data from the state election offices. this is what she found. in colorado, a large latino population, this is how many new voters signed up as democrats in 2008 looking at the period from january to october. this is how many new voters signed up as republicans in the the same time period in 2008. a big advantage for the democrats. just colossal. that was 2008 in colorado. now look at what has happened in the same time span this year in 2012. democrats have improved their number some over even what they had in 2008. look at the republicans. the republicans in colorado, they improved their numbers a lot. the democrats have lost the colossal part of what had been their colossal advantage in new voter registration in colorado. let's go to iowa. look at this. from january to october, that sweet spot again in 2008, new democratic registrations outpaced republican registrations in iowa by almost 8 to 1. look at 2012. look at the difference. that's negative. look at those numbers. that's 0 in the middle. where did all the democrats go? the democrats have lost, not gained, lost alm
